Lower Costs and Simplify Production of Metal Stamped Parts

Using a Smart Design and DFM to lower costs and simplify production of metal stamped parts.

How Smart Design and DFM Can Lower Costs and Simplify Production of Metal Stamped Parts

Designing a part that functions well isn’t enough. It must also be easy to make, repeatable at high volumes, and compatible with real-world processes. That’s the foundation of Design for Manufacturing, or DFM—a process that prioritizes practical decisions during design so the path to production is smoother, faster, and more cost-effective.

This approach isn’t about shortcuts. It’s about long-term thinking that pays off at every stage, from development to assembly.

What Design for Manufacturing Looks Like in Practice

DFM focuses on making better decisions early on. These aren’t cosmetic changes—they affect how a part fits, forms, and functions on the floor. By working directly with Micro Forms’ production experts, design engineers can:

  • Reduce unnecessary steps during assembly
  • Choose materials that are easier to form or source
  • Design features that eliminate secondary operations
  • Simplify tooling and reduce changeover times
  • Improve consistency without increasing cost

This means fewer surprises, lower labor demands, and less scrap.

The Arbor Stakes Retainer Redesign

A project with Arbor Stakes illustrates what DFM can do. They had a metal retainer that required a hammer and installation tube. That setup damaged nearby parts, complicated assembly, and didn’t always hold its position on the stake.

The Micro Forms team rethought the design around tool-free installation. They ran a structural analysis to understand what force was needed at each contact point. Once prototypes confirmed the concept, they refined only one feature—the angle of the teeth—to lock securely without added hardware.

Instead of committing to a fixed die, they developed tooling that allowed small changes without starting over. That flexibility gave Arbor Stakes a finished part that worked better, assembled faster, and shipped without damage.

DFM made the difference—not by overhauling the entire part, but by targeting changes that removed complexity and added control.

Why DFM Should Be the Starting Point

Every extra tool, fixture, or workaround adds time and cost. When design teams overlook how something will be made, those costs show up in delays, defects, or rework. DFM flips that script.

By designing with production in mind, manufacturers can control timelines, improve quality, and protect margins. It’s not about doing less. It’s about doing what matters—and doing it right the first time.

Micro Forms Builds for the Floor

At Micro Forms, we use DFM as the starting point for every project. That means looking beyond CAD models to focus on what works in real-world settings. We build tooling in-house, support high-volume applications, and specialize in detailed and repeatable parts.

If you’re tired of chasing problems downstream, let’s discuss what a better design can do.

Let’s take the complexity out of production.
